Discover Socoa

Socoa in Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a charming seaside district shared by the communes of Ciboure and Urrugne in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region of the Basque Country. The bay of Socoa, protected by its famous fort and 3 dikes, is home to two beaches ideal for children and water sports enthusiasts. So get in the water and enjoy towed buoys, flyfish, jet-skiing, scuba diving, or simply enjoy the beachfront.

The Socoa fort, built in 1627 under the command of Louis XIV, was essentially an islet, accessible on foot only at low tide. At the end of the 17th century, the famous architect and engineer Vauban built a road linking the fortification to the shore, as well as a series of barracks in the inner area at the foot of the tower. This is how Fort de Socoa de France reached its final appearance, which is now available to tourists.

All along the jetty leading to the fort, you’ll find numerous restaurants serving Basque specialities at affordable prices. Cross the bay to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and get your cameras ready to immortalize the magnificent sunrises and sunsets over the ocean and the Socoa fort illuminated at night.

The scenery from the tower is pleasant and breathtaking, which is reason enough to visit. Stroll along the seawall and feel the ocean waves crashing beneath your feet. It’s a feeling that’s well worth experiencing on your family vacation in the Basque Country, Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
